Walt Whitman Bridge
I-76 Corridor Rehabilitation
The DRPA invested $74 million in a multi-year project to rehabilitate approximately two miles of Interstate 76 in South Philadelphia between the bridge's toll plaza and Passyunk Avenue.
Improvements included:
- Pavement rehabilitation with select areas of full-depth pavement reconstruction with curb replacement
- Improvement of drainage with the addition of new inlets
- Removal and replacement of concrete roadway on the overpasses
- Shoulder grading
- Rehabilitation of pedestrian tunnels
- Installation of new sign structures
- Installation of new light poles, electrical and fiber optic lines

The project is a recipient of the "2022 New Jersey's Leading Capital Construction Project Award" from the New Jersey Alliance for Action.

Westbound traffic is shifted to the right lanes to allow crews to remove the top layer of roadway on the 10th St. overpass.
Crews work to remove the old overhead sign structures along I-76. The work was completed overnight to minimize impact to travelers.
The project includes all-new overhead sign structures along I-76. Crews took the first step of their replacements by removing the old existing signs during the overnight hours.
Crews perform concrete repairs and install utilities on the on/off ramps from I-76 prior to paving.
Crews mill and pave the ramp from Broad Street North to the Walt Whitman Bridge. Improvements along the ramp include installation of new utilities and drainage improvements.
