Travel Advisory – Commodore Barry Bridge: Only 1 Lane to PA on Sunday, June 1

On Sunday, June 1, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., only one lane will be open to Pennsylvania-bound traffic on the Commodore Barry Bridge. Two lanes will remain open to New Jersey-bound traffic.
This lane restriction is the result of an unscheduled but necessary repair to the bridge’s fiber optic infrastructure. The fiber optic cable is an essential component of the bridge’s operations, supporting traffic control systems, lighting, communications, and more.
Motorists are encouraged to:
- Allow extra travel time
- Check traffic conditions before departing
- Consider alternate routes, such as the Walt Whitman or Ben Franklin Bridge, which will have four lanes available in the peak travel direction.
Due to an ongoing upgrade to the bridge’s moveable barrier system, the usual lane shift to accommodate additional westbound traffic will not be possible during this work.
The Commodore Barry Bridge is undergoing a $220 million multi-year project to paint and rehabilitate the bridge. This complex effort involves careful planning and staging to keep traffic moving on a five-lane bridge. The DRPA appreciates the public’s patience as we work to balance the needs of daily commuters with essential construction demands.
DRPA appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation. Once complete, this project will enhance the safety, reliability, and longevity of the bridge, which serves more than 41,000 vehicles each day.
