Walt Whitman Bridge Travel Advisory for I-76 Motorists

A new traffic pattern with one travel lane in each direction on I-76 begins May 10


Starting Monday, May 10, the Walt Whitman Bridge I-76 Corridor Rehabilitation Project will begin a new four-month construction phase on the corridor between Broad Street (Exit 349) and Passyunk Avenue (Exit 347). As a result of the work in this phase, only one lane in each direction will be open to traffic. Construction activities will include drainage improvements, concrete repairs to overpasses, milling, and paving. The work is expected to be completed at the end of August.
 
Several ramps will be closed during these four months to allow work to occur on the ramps and the merge between the ramps and corridor.  

Beginning May 10, the following ramps will be affected by the construction:

  • The entrance ramp from Broad Street north to Interstate 76 west will be closed until May 30.
  • The exit ramp (Exit 348) from Interstate 76 west to Penrose Avenue will be closed until May 23.
  • The entrance ramp from Penrose Avenue north to Interstate 76 east will be closed until May 23. 

Beginning May 25, the following ramps will be affected by the construction:

  • The entrance ramp from Passyunk Avenue to Interstate 76 west will be closed until June 7.
  • The exit ramp from Interstate 76 west to Passyunk Avenue will be closed until May 27.

Detours will be in place to guide motorists around the ramp closures.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time and are reminded to stay alert, exercise caution, and obey speed limits when traveling through work zones.

The Walt Whitman Bridge I-76 Corridor Rehabilitation Project began in 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2023. The $74.1 million project rehabilitates approximately two miles of Interstate 76 in South Philadelphia between the bridge's toll plaza and Passyunk Avenue.
