DRPA Joins Regional Effort to Address Aggressive Driving

Pennsylvania and New Jersey agencies coordinate enforcement wave through April 26 to improve roadway safety

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) joined regional transportation and law enforcement partners on April 9 at the Walt Whitman Bridge in Philadelphia to kick off a coordinated, multi-state effort focused on reducing aggressive driving across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The initiative, led by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania State Police, includes a statewide aggressive driving enforcement wave now through April 26. A one-day coordinated enforcement effort across both states is also scheduled for April 14.

Law enforcement agencies will focus on speeding, distracted driving, work zone awareness, and other unsafe behaviors such as following too closely, making careless lane changes, and driving too fast for conditions.

DRPA Police Highlight Regional Safety Commitment

Representing DRPA at the kickoff event, Police Lieutenant Jessica Gabe emphasized the Authority’s role in maintaining safe travel across the region.

“As connectors of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the DRPA Police Department is committed to safety throughout our region,” said Lt. Gabe. “Aggressive driving isn’t just a traffic issue, it’s a public safety concern that puts lives at risk every day.”

Lt. Gabe noted that the DRPA Police Department continues to address aggressive driving through increased patrols, targeted enforcement, and public awareness efforts across the Authority’s four Delaware River bridges.

“Enforcement plays a key role, but real change happens when drivers take responsibility behind the wheel,” she added. “Choosing patience over frustration and caution over carelessness is how we make a difference.”

Enforcement and Regional Coordination

The effort includes participation from approximately 300 municipal agencies in Pennsylvania, along with partners in New Jersey, including the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

Enforcement strategies include saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrols.

Motorists should expect an increased law enforcement presence across roadways and bridges throughout the region during this initiative.

Aggressive Driving by the Numbers

Aggressive driving remains a serious and ongoing safety concern. In 2024, Pennsylvania alone reported:

  • 5,897 aggressive-driving crashes were reported
  • 106 fatalities occurred
  • 405 suspected serious injuries were recorded

Aggressive driving crashes typically involve multiple unsafe behaviors, including speeding, running red lights, tailgating, and distracted driving.

Safe Driving Reminders

Officials remind motorists to:

  • Stay focused and avoid distractions
  • Maintain safe following distances
  • Use turn signals and drive predictably
  • Remain calm and avoid engaging with aggressive drivers

Together, DRPA and its regional partners are working to make roadways safer for everyone, with a shared focus on enforcement, awareness, and personal responsibility. As Lt. Gabe noted, “Real change happens when drivers take responsibility behind the wheel.”
