PROJECTS & STUDIES

Walt Whitman Bridge Deck Truss Project

The Walt Whitman Bridge provides a connection for commuters, commercial vehicle operators carrying goods to and from the ports along the Delaware River, tourists visiting the New Jersey Shore, and countless others traveling along Interstate 76 as well as those traveling to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Over the years all of that traffic has resulted in a great deal of wear and tear on the bridge and its related infrastructure. In the early 1990s, the DRPA began an ambitious decade-long project to rehabilitate the corridor. During that time the agency replaced all of the bridge’s approach roadways and spans while leaving the structure’s main suspension spans intact.

With all of the rehabilitation work on the approach spans now complete, the DRPA has awarded a $128 million contract to a construction firm based in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, American Bridge Company, to replace the deck in the suspension spans.

Philadelphia Waterfront Transit Expansion Alternatives

The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO), a subsidiary of the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), evaluated alternatives to expand transit services along Philadelphia’s Waterfront. The alternatives were evaluated as part of an Alternatives Analysis (AA), the first step in the Federal Transit Administration’s Planning Process. This Alternatives Analysis was preceded by the Southern New Jersey to Philadelphia Transit Study (October 2005) which strongly recommended increased rail transit in this corridor.
