Deck the Walt
DRPA's comprehensive, 4-year construction project to replace the deck of the Walt Whitman Bridge

7 Stages – Scheme similar to what was used during redecking of Walt Whitman Bridge Main Approach Spans (1995 – 1999).

During Morning and Afternoon rush hours 6 lanes out of a total of 7 lanes will be available for traffic during construction.  

4 lanes will be open into Pennsylvania during the Morning Rush Hour (except for Stage 4 when there will be 3 lanes).

3 lanes will be open into New Jersey during the Afternoon Rush Hour.

During Mid-Day Hours five lanes will be open to traffic.

During the evening and overnight hours, six lanes of traffic will be open if there is no construction activity on the bridge.

During construction bridge lanes will be slightly narrower.

 

Stage 1: August 2011 to January 25 2012

Lane 7 – Closed To Traffic (Reopened on January 25)

Stage 2: January 25 2012 to April 11 2012

Lane 6 – Closed (Reopened on April 11) 

Stage 3:  April 11 2012 to July 2012

Lane 5 – affects eastbound traffic from Pennsylvania – Eastbound Cattle chute north of work area in Lane 4 except during Morning Rush

Stage 4:  Mid-July 2012 to November 2012

Lane 4 – middle lane will be closed – No Cattle chutes

Anticipated completion date of the project is January 2014
